Written by a surgeon who performs these operations every week
Jan Spiller has worked in orthopaedic and spinal surgery since 2004. He became a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2010, headed the Department of Spinal Surgery at the Specialist Clinic for Orthopaedics Stenum from 2012, and has led the Department of Spinal Surgery at Christian Hospital Quakenbrück since 2025 – one of the partner clinics ENANDE works with. In 2017 he was certified as a spinal surgeon by the German Spine Society (DWG).
In more than 20 years as a surgeon he has performed over 7,000 spinal procedures, among them more than 4,000 disc replacements. Since 2009 he has also been teaching surgeons from Germany and abroad in spinal approaches and lumbar disc replacement, and speaks regularly at national and international conferences.
This book is not a general guide to back pain. It is written for people who have already been told that surgery is an option – and who want to understand what that decision involves before they make it.

What's inside
The book follows the same path you do: understanding what is happening in your spine, seeing what the standard treatments actually achieve, and then looking at the alternatives to fusion – including the questions most patients only think of on the way home from the consultation.
